The Government of The Gambia and the People’s Republic of China have signed a US$11.9 million contract aimed at transforming electricity distribution networks and expanding access to reliable power for communities across the Greater Banjul Area. The contract for the China Aid Gambia Electricity Enhancement Project (GEEP) was signed on Friday, September 18, 2026, at the Ministry of Petroleum, Energy and Mines at Petroleum House, between the National Water and Electricity Company Limited (NAWEC) and Chinese contractor TBEA Co., Ltd.

The West African Network of Excellence for TB, AIDS and Malaria (WANETAM-4) has officially launched a five-year programme aimed at strengthening health research, laboratory systems and scientific capacity across West Africa. The programme, funded through the European Union-Africa Global Health EDCTP3 partnership and coordinated by the MRC Unit The Gambia at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, was launched on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, at the African Princess Beach Hotel in Kololi.

Gamcel customers to get 89 prefix in next phase of number migration

GAMCEL customers have been assured that they do not need to take any action on their existing mobile numbers for now, as The Gambia transitions from seven-digit to nine-digit mobile numbers in phases. GAMCEL, which will be part of the second phase of the national numbering migration, said the regulator - the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) - has reserved the 89 prefix for its customers.

The State-Owned Enterprises Commission (SOEC) successfully hosted its inaugural Board Induction on Tuesday, 15 September 2026, at Bakadaji Hotel, bringing together Board members from State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) across The Gambia.  The induction provided an important platform for Board members to strengthen their understanding of the SOE Act 2023, SOE Regulations, and the Code of Good Corporate Governance, with presentations focused on their roles, responsibilities, governance obligations, and compliance requirements.

IEC registers 3 more political parties ahead of December polls

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has registered three more political parties ahead of the December 5 presidential election.  The three newly registered parties are the National Builders Party (NBP), The Gambia Labour Party (GLP), and The National Democratic Party (NDP). The Gambia has not got a total of 27 political parties aiming to contest in the December 2026 presidential race. The new party registrations were done following the fulfilment of the requirements for registration as political parties under section 106 of the Elections Act 2025.

The National Democratic Party (NDP) and political movement NAFAA have formally entered into a political agreement following a signing ceremony held at the NDP bureau in Farato. The event, which was followed by a press conference, brought together leaders and representatives of both groups, supporters, and members of the media. The agreement is aimed at strengthening political cooperation between the NDP and NAFAA as both sides seek to work together on matters of national interest and the country's political future.
