Right to See Gambia brings free eye care to Tanji

The event drew residents from Tanji and neighbouring communities, who benefitted not only from eye care but also from free medical checks including blood pressure, diabetes, and other related conditions. The services were delivered by a team of volunteers comprising ophthalmic opticians and refractionists.

The founder of Right to See Charity shared the organisation’s history, explaining that it was established in 2012 with the mission of providing free healthcare services to disadvantaged communities. Since its inception, the charity has reached thousands of people across The Gambia.

Ismaila Gomez, Chairperson of the Gambia Chapter, emphasised the charity’s vision. “As the name suggests, everyone has the right to clear vision, but many are denied this due to the high costs involved. This charity was founded to bridge that gap and ensure access to eye care for all,” he said. Gomez urged beneficiaries to follow the advice of opticians to prevent worsening conditions and called on the public to support the charity’s mission.

Mr Ousman Ceesay, Officer in Charge of Tanji Health Centre and host of the event, praised the initiative, describing it as the first of its kind in the community. “This gesture is timely and highly appreciated. Eye care is crucial in preventing blindness, and we commend the organisers for their intervention,” he stated. He further advised residents to avoid seeking treatment from herbalists and instead consult professional opticians.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Amie Sowe expressed heartfelt gratitude. She revealed that she had struggled with her eye condition for five years, visiting major hospitals without success. “This initiative has given me hope, and I am deeply thankful for the support extended to Tanji and its surrounding communities,” she said.

The event underscored the importance of accessible healthcare and highlighted the charity’s commitment to serving vulnerable communities across The Gambia.
