Thirteen senior secondary schools from Region Two West participated, each presenting projects designed to address pressing environmental issues in their communities. The initiatives ranged from waste recycling and energy conservation to tackling bush fires, tree felling, soil erosion, and sustainable farming practices.
The atmosphere was vibrant and inspiring as students confidently explained their ideas to an audience of teachers, education specialists, environmental activists, and community members. Their presentations underscored that climate action is not only a global responsibility but also a local and personal commitment.
More than a competition, the festival aimed to empower adolescents and young people to take ownership of climate challenges and become drivers of grassroots environmental action.
Mr Steve Atyeo, Chairperson of RAISE Gambia Trustees, praised the students’ creativity and dedication. “It was fantastic to be part of this celebration of local solutions to climate change. The passion of the students and their innovative ideas clearly show how vital young people are in our urgent efforts to address the ongoing climate crisis,” he said.
Ms Fatou Bittaye Cham, Director of STED, expressed appreciation to RAISE Gambia for its continued partnership in strengthening science education. She commended the schools for their “brilliant and innovative climate change solution projects,” stressing the importance of nurturing young minds to confront global challenges.
Representing the Permanent Secretary, Mr Ousman Bah, Deputy Permanent Secretary of Administration, delivered the keynote address and officially declared the festival open, setting the tone for a day of learning, collaboration, and inspiration.
After hours of presentations and evaluations, the chief judge announced the winners as: 1st Position: Mansa Colley Bojang Senior Secondary School, 2nd Position: St. Peter’s Technical Senior Secondary School, and 3rd Position: Jamisa Senior Secondary School
While the competition crowned winners, the true success of the festival lay in the collective spirit of innovation, resilience, and determination demonstrated by all participating schools, affirming the critical role of young Gambians in shaping a more sustainable future.
