IEC Chairman Joseph Mendy made the statement on Thursday, 10 September 2026, during the Commission’s monthly stakeholder consultative forum held at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Centre in Bijilo.
Mendy said the revising courts are currently hearing cases involving objections, and expressed hope that the process would be completed within the expected timeframe.
“Currently, the revising courts are busy hearing the cases of objections,” he stated. “I hope all the courts will conclude on all the cases within 60 days. This will pave the way for the finalization of the Voter List.”
The IEC chairman, however, stressed that the Commission would not interfere in the work of the courts, noting that they are independent organs.
“I would like to make it clear that the Courts are independent organs and as such the Commission will not interfere in their deliberations,” Mendy said.
The revising court process comes as the IEC continues preparations for the presidential election scheduled for December 5, 2026.
Mr Mendy also informed stakeholders that nomination of candidates for the presidential election will take place from November 3 to 14, both dates inclusive. Nomination forms will be issued to aspiring candidates starting September 21.
He said the Commission had also started rolling out capacity-building activities, with training for IEC personnel remaining a key priority.
According to Mendy, the training is aimed at enhancing electoral service delivery and will also benefit other stakeholders involved in the electoral process.
He listed the Inter-Party Committee, civil society organisations, the media through the Gambia Press Union, the Gambia Police Force and the Gambia Federation of the Disabled among those benefiting from the training.
Mendy said the Commission’s continued engagement with stakeholders was also important in addressing fake news, misinformation and disinformation surrounding the electoral process.
He assured stakeholders and the electorate of the IEC’s continued commitment to delivering free, fair, transparent and inclusive elections in December 2026.
