In a statement released by the UDP Media & Communications Team, the party said it continues to “defend the integrity of our electoral process and democracy” through its objections filed with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).
The party cited one case currently before the court as an example of its work. The objection was filed by the UDP and argued by party lawyer Ya Kumba.
During cross-examination, the defendant admitted on the witness stand that they are not Gambian, “despite being in possession of both a voter’s card and a national ID,” the UDP said.
The court is expected to deliver its ruling on the matter today.
According to the UDP, other political parties also submitted objections to the IEC and paid the required fees during the supplementary registration period.
“However, they subsequently abandoned their cases,” the statement said. “As we speak today, the UDP is the only party actively pursuing its cases in the courts.”
The party drew a contrast between its legal work and what it described as a focus on “becoming President.”
“While some people may be focused solely on becoming President, the UDP continues to do what it has always done — stand up for the electoral process, pursue legitimate legal challenges, and defend the principles of our democracy,” the statement read.
The Revising Court is handling objections related to the supplementary voter registration exercise conducted ahead of upcoming elections. The rulings are expected to determine the final voters’ register.
The UDP said: “The work continues.”
