Concerned staff of Gamcel, Gambia’s leading state-owned telecommunications company on Monday petitioned the management demanding better working conditions and payment of their two-month salaries.

The petition was submitted to the management during a peaceful protest held at the Gamcel head office along the Mamadi Manjang highway.

In the petition, concerned staff highlighted a range of issues, which include delayed salary payments, unaccounted deductions for SSHFC, income tax, staff medical insurance to poor working conditions.

Pierre Njie, commercial clerk of the company, who read the petition on behalf of his colleagues, said the undersigned concerned staff of Gamcel have not been satisfied with management in handling staff affairs for over two years now.

According to him, the issue started seven years ago and since then the system has been ineffective and monopolised, causing significant problems to service delivery and revenue generation, ultimately affecting staff and customer service.

Njie recalled that since September 2022, there have been delays in the payment of staffs’ salaries, which he said, has affected the company staff and the management did not explain any reasons that caused the delay in the patment.

"In pursuance to the need to urgently address this issue, we, the undersigned staff, demand that Gamcel management take urgent steps within the reasonable timelines."

He disclosed that their December salaries are still unpaid and they demanded that this should be paid immediately and within a week latest.

He alluded to the fact that deductions from staff salaries have been on going from credit union payments for over two years now.

"We demand that these payments be reconciled and information provided on how to access them when needed within the next three weeks."

The staff medical insurance, he added, has been stopped for almost three years without any explanation, and they also demand the management to explain and its immediate resumption within three weeks.

He added that Social Security information has not been accessible to staff and they have lodged enquires to the Social Security and Housing Finance Corporation (SSHFC), and demand an explanation from Gamcel management as to why they can't access this information and call for immediate access to this information either from SSHFC or Gamcel within two weeks.

He also talked about staff personal income taxes have been deducted but appears not to be paid, which is affecting staff from accessing other services such as clearance for vehicles among others.

"We demand an explanation of where these deductions are being paid and for all outstanding payments to be deposited in the appropriate accounts so that staff can access other services."
