The Government of The Gambia has announced that nationwide electricity access has reached 90 per cent, fulfilling a major national target set for 2025.

The announcement was made during a press briefing on Tuesday, where officials described the development as a transformative step in expanding essential services across the country.

According to the minister for Information, Media and Broadcasting Services, Dr Ismaila Ceesay, the newly electrified communities in the North Bank Region were connected to the national grid in recent weeks. He mentioned that many of these communities had gone “generations without access to electricity”.

“In addition to households, more than 1,000 schools and over 100 health facilities have been connected under the rural electrification program, improving learning conditions and healthcare delivery,” he added.

Ceesay reiterated that the milestone has been acknowledged by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which commended The Gambia’s progress in implementing regional energy initiatives, describing the achievement as part of a broader strategy aimed at inclusive development, reducing rural-urban disparities, and improving living standards nationwide.

Ceesay underscored that the Department of Immigration has also introduced a new cashless payment system for national ID cards and residential permits. Since February 16, all payments must be made through designated commercial banks, with applicants required to present official receipts before processing.

The Ministry’s reform enhances transparency and strengthens public financial management systems.

Meanwhile, 56 male inmates were granted presidential pardons and released from Mile Two State Prison last week, citing that the move “aligns with government efforts” to promote rehabilitation and reintegration within the justice system. He further mentioned progress in road construction, with approximately 1,200 kilometers completed and an additional 870 kilometers planned for 2026.

On the economic front, officials projected 5.9 per cent GDP growth, citing improved fiscal discipline and a budget deficit reduced to around one per cent.

The press briefing concluded with assurances that efforts to expand essential services and strengthen governance systems will continue across all sectors.
