Two Canadian brothers, Demitri Roopnarine and Yuri Roopnarine recently extended magnanimity to Banni Basic Cycle School in Lower Badibou District with the donation of fifteen computers and other learning equipment.

Similar gesture was also extended to other schools within the district. The items are meant to enhance the teaching and learning process in the beneficiary schools and their administrative work. The gesture came following the administration’s sought for help as it has so long struggled to either do its work manually or by taking it outside the school which was not cost effective for the school and consequently delayed their work. However, these learning materials donated, were assembled by Demitri and Yuri in Canada and then made sure that they were transported to The Gambia for further distribution to schools.

Lamin Conteh, a Gambian businessman based in Canada, who also serves as the Public Relations Officer for the Gambian-Canadian Association, helped ship the materials to The Gambia.

Dee Roopnarine, who spoke on behalf of the donors, said he has rendered similar support for a quite a while, expressing his love for supporting students and communities especially those in developing countries.

“I encouraged Demitri Roopnarine and Yuri Roopnarine to support those who are battling with their education in terms of acquiring learning materials.” he said.

A statement issued by Ebrima Jadama, principal of Banni Basic Cycle School, applauded the donors for the gesture, highlighting that the school does not have a functional library to enhance teaching and learning.

He informed that the items donated would significantly help in their day- to -day work, further reminding that the school operates from Early Childhood Development (ECD) to (Grade 9).

The school, he added, has currently enrolled 326 students of which 176 are girls and 150 boys with 21 members of staff.

“Despite the constraints, the school is being recogniszed as a Centre of excellence in the Region. We prepare students with good morals, perform better in external exams and school competitions.” he said.
