Victory Day, commemorated annually on August 30, honours the decisive triumph of Turkish forces at the Battle of Dumlupınar in 1922 under the leadership of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. The victory paved the way for the establishment of the modern Republic of Türkiye.
The event attracted Minister of Defense Baboucarr O. Joof, senior government officials, service chiefs, members of the diplomatic corps, and other guests.
Addressing the gathering, H.E. Fahri Türker Oba, outgoing Ambassador of Türkiye to The Gambia, said this was the second time the embassy was marking the occasion in Banjul.
“The Great Victory of 1922 was one of the most important turning points in our nation’s history,” he said.
“In the words of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, it was a great achievement that exemplified the enormous might and heroism of the Turkish army, officers and command staff.”
Ambassador Oba noted that 30 August continues to remind Turks of the importance of independence, unity and determination. “It is also a day to remember with gratitude those who made great sacrifices for our country.”
He underlined the strong and friendly relations between Türkiye and The Gambia, particularly in defense and security.
“Military and security cooperation are major elements contributing to our friendship that we highly value,” he said.
“Over the years, Gambian military and security personnel have received training in Türkiye. The equipment and supplies we have also contributed to The Gambia’s participation in international operations.”
The Ambassador expressed optimism that mutual visits and cooperation in defense and security will continue to grow.
For his part, Minister of Defense Baboucarr O. Joof commended Ambassador Oba for his service to The Gambia.
“You’ve been a very close partner of government in several areas, but most particularly with us in the Gambia Armed Forces,” he said. “We wish you the best in your next assignment.”
Minister Joof acknowledged Türkiye’s transformation over the past century, both economically and militarily.
“You've come so far in 100 years and militarily you've also gone very far. We are hopeful that in the next century we will see Türkiye even stronger,” he said.
“Under President Erdogan, Türkiye has grown both economically and in terms of military strength.”
He congratulated the people of Türkiye and joined them in remembering the fallen heroes of the 1922 victory.
The evening reception also witnessed a video play of Turkish military strength and capabilities.
