VP blames poor records, institutional changes for audit delays

Vice President Muhammed B.S. Jallow has attributed delays in implementing some National Audit Office recommendations to institutional changes and weaknesses in government record-keeping. Speaking at the National Assembly during oral questions on Wednesday, Jallow said the government had fully implemented 17 of 30 audit recommendations covering the period 2023 to 2025, while seven were currently being implemented and six were only partially implemented. Asked why some recommendations had taken so long to be fully implemented, the Vice President said the reasons differed depending on the nature of each recommendation.

Mama Kandeh, has issued a public apology to Gambians following his controversial comments about the recent electricity protest in the Greater Banjul Area.   On Monday, 7 September 2026, residents staged demonstrations over persistent power outages that have disrupted daily life and business activities. In his initial reaction, Kandeh described the protest as a “deliberate act of sabotage”, claiming it had been planned days in advance.   The remarks drew sharp criticism from civil society groups and ordinary citizens, who argued that the protest was a genuine expression of frustration over the country’s worsening electricity crisis.

Dr Touray admits she shares responsibility for Barrow government’s ‘failures’

Former Vice President and 2026 presidential aspirant Dr Isatou Touray has admitted that she cannot completely distance herself from the failures of the Barrow administration, saying she was part of the government and therefore accepts responsibility for what went wrong. Speaking on Coffee Time with Peter Gomez, Dr Touray said her decision to challenge President Adama Barrow in the December 2026 presidential election was driven by her belief that the promises made during the 2016 political transition had not been fulfilled. “Barrow has failed, to a great extent,” she said, while stressing that she would not place all the blame on the president. “But I will not exonerate myself from that failure. I was part of it,” Dr Touray said. She explained that members of the administration had agreed on a clear plan of action following the 2016 change, with targets that were supposed to be measurable, achievable and reported within specific periods.
