President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, His Excellency Adama Barrow, GMRG, has approved the promotion of the top echelon of the Gambia Armed Forces (GAF), further strengthening the country's military leadership structure.

The promotions, which took effect on 4 August 2026, were made under the constitutional powers vested in the President as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.

Under the latest changes, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Ousman Gomez has been promoted from the rank of Major General to Lieutenant General, marking a significant milestone in his military career and leadership of the armed forces.

Similarly, Deputy Chief of Defence Staff (DCDS) Sait Njie has been elevated from Brigadier General to Major General, in recognition of his appointment and responsibilities within the military hierarchy.

Meanwhile, Commander of the Republican National Guard (RNG) Alagie Sanneh has also been promoted from the rank of Colonel to Brigadier General, strengthening the leadership status of the elite security formation.

The rank advancements come shortly after the appointments of the three officers to their respective positions and are understood to be in line with the responsibilities attached to their offices within the Armed Forces.

Military officials noted that the promotions reflect the continued professionalisation of the Gambia Armed Forces and are commensurate with the officers' current appointments and strategic leadership roles.

The promotions underscore the confidence reposed in the officers by the Commander-in-Chief and reaffirm the government's commitment to strengthening military leadership and institutional effectiveness within the country's defence architecture.
