The Deputy Head of Mission (DHM), Lieutenant General (Rtd) Yakuba A. Drammeh, who deputized for the Ambassador, His Excellency Momodou Lamin Bah, welcomed the esteemed guests to the Embassy and highlighted the profound importance the Embassy attaches to cultural exchanges. In his remarks, DHM Drammeh highlighted the importance of people-to-people connection and strategic partnership as foundations for deepening bilateral relations.
He emphasized how these events serve as strategic gateways to vital investment opportunities in tourism, trade and commerce facilitation, technology, and telecommunications.
“The Embassy serves as a platform to connect American professionals with opportunities in The Gambia, and to connect Gambian professionals with opportunities in the United States,” the DHM Drammeh stated.
He encouraged participants to engage, exchange ideas, and explore areas of collaboration. The Embassy team stands ready to provide information and support to facilitate business and investment prospects in The Gambia, the DHM stressed.
In addition, he expressed confidence that such engagements will strengthen understanding and foster mutually beneficial partnerships that contribute to shared prosperity for The Gambia and the United States.
A key highlight of the evening was a detailed presentation by First Secretary Saikou Ceesay on the traditional musical instruments belonging to the diverse ethnic groups of The Gambia. His showcase featured the historic architecture and significance of the kora, riti, tama, sabar drums, and gambareh.
First Secretary Ceesay educated the audience on the historic origins of these instruments and the critical socio-cultural role of Jalis (griots) as oral historians and storytellers in traditional Gambian society.
First Secretary Ceesay also guided guests through the historical evolution of Gambian music during the 1960s, spotlighting the seminal contributions of iconic musical bands such as Guelewar,the Super Eagles, and Ifang Bondi. Complementing the history with live performance, Jali Salieu Suso, a renowned New York-based Gambian Kora griot, captivated attendees with traditional melodies.
The Executive Director of the Young American Professionals stated that the organization’s collaboration with the Embassy has grown significantly over the past three years through engagements thatintroduce American professionals to The Gambia’s culture and opportunities. He praised Gambian diplomats for their openness and engagement and reiterated his organization’s commitment to deepening the partnership.
The immersive experience extended to an authentic culinary showcase where guests sampled celebrated Gambian cuisine, including benachin (one-pot rice) and domoda (peanut stew). Embassy staff engaged closely with attendees, explaining traditional preparation methods and native ingredients defining Gambian gastronomy. The evening's atmosphere was further enriched by visual displays of promotional posters highlighting The Gambia's diverse biodiversity and unique natural landscapes.
