The Vice President of the Republic, Muhammed B. Jallow, on Wednesday received medical student leaders from the University of The Gambia, who paid a courtesy call for key discussions aimed at strengthening medical education and enhancing healthcare delivery nationwide.

The delegation, comprising the executive members of the University of The Gambia Medical Students’ Association (UniGaMSA), presented several priority areas requiring government support. Chief among them was the revitalisation of the international elective programme, which has remained dormant in recent years. The students stressed that restoring the initiative would allow Gambian medical students undertake clinical placements abroad, exposing them to diverse healthcare systems and enabling them to bring back valuable knowledge and best practices.

In response, Vice President Jallow assured the delegation that he would engage both the Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (MoHERST) and the Ministry of Health to explore the most effective approach to revive the programme.

The students also raised concerns about teaching and learning facilities within the medical school, calling for improved multimedia equipment. While projectors were mentioned, the Vice President noted that such technology is becoming outdated and suggested exploring more modern and sustainable alternatives to support teaching and learning. He pledged to consult with relevant authorities to identify the most appropriate solutions.

On the issue of community health initiatives, the Vice President advised UniGaMSA to formally address requests for transportation and logistical support to the Office of the Chief of Staff whenever embarking on outreach programmes or nationwide health campaigns. He commended the association’s impact across the country and assured them of his commitment to engage the Minister for Health to ensure essential medications and supplies are made available for future outreach activities.

The meeting concluded on a positive note, with Vice President Jallow expressing appreciation for the dedication, innovation and nationwide impact of UniGaMSA. He encouraged the student leaders to remain steadfast in their mission to serve communities and reaffirmed his commitment to work with ministries and stakeholders to advance the issues raised.

For their part, the delegation expressed profound gratitude to the Vice President for the warm reception and meaningful discussions, noting his strong commitment to supporting initiatives that not only advance medical education but also improve healthcare delivery in The Gambia.
