Mama Kandeh, leader of the Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC), recently allied with the National People's Party (NPP) to endorse President Adama Barrow's candidacy as the 5th December race for the State House draws nearer.
Alhagie Mamadi Kurang had an exclusive interview with The Point on Friday at the Kairaba Beach Hotel in Senegambia, ahead of the ceremony for the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) by leaders of the UDP-led Gambia First Coalition.
Questioned by this reporter on the potential impact of Mama Kandeh's joining of the incumbent, which could be in favour of the NPP against his party (UDP), Mr Kurang gave a mild smile, saying ‘Kandeh is a fading force’ in Gambian politics.
In furtherance to his claim of Kandeh's imminent metamorphosis into a political ghost in the local arena, Mr Kurang said they are not worried about Kandeh.
"At the moment," he maintained, "Mama Kandeh is like a lot of smoke but no fire, as they say in Mandinka. As you know, his party was already leaving him. Everybody in his party was going to Barrow. So, he just followed. Nobody is following him. He followed his supporters to Barrow. So, we are not worried. That has already been factored in."
Further, the high-profile young politician claimed that the 5th December clash for the highest office will centre around skyrocketing market prices, high living costs, food insecurity, exorbitant energy, unreliable power and mind-blogging housing costs.
These are the issues the voters, who have been facing them over the years under President Barrow, will vote around on December 5, he reiterated.
