“We are not mourning them; we are celebrating them,” Mr. Darboe told thousands of supporters, recalling the sacrifices of those who challenged authoritarian rule under former President Yahya Jammeh.
The rally drew a large crowd, including allied groups, political leaders, and members of the media. Much of Mr. Darboe’s address focused on the party’s most difficult years, particularly during Mr. Jammeh’s 22-year rule.
He recounted September 22, 1996, as one of the UDP’s darkest days, when supporters were ambushed at Denton Bridge. Several young members, including Fa Badjo Darboe and Kebuteh Jafuneh, were tortured, while others lost their lives. The following day, more than 70 injured people were brought to Mr. Darboe’s home.
He also recalled the arrest and beating of Amadou Sanneh by agents of the National Intelligence Agency, saying Mr. Sanneh was targeted for refusing to support the ruling Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction (APRC).
Mr. Darboe emphasised that revisiting these episodes was not simply about remembering the past, but about reminding younger Gambians of the sacrifices made to break the climate of fear. He cited a confrontation at Fass Njaga Choi, where police denied the UDP a permit to hold a meeting. Defying orders to return to Banjul, Mr. Darboe told officers the party would leave only if arrested.
He also referenced events at Chamoi Bridge, accusing authorities of attempting to implicate UDP supporters in incidents designed to weaken the party. He expressed gratitude to Binta Sabally, Sarjo Kunjang Sanneh, and Fatou Darboe for their roles during that period.
The anniversary rally, Mr. Darboe said, was both a celebration of resilience and a reminder of the sacrifices that shaped the UDP’s journey.
