Mauritanian scholar captivates Banjul audience with lessons on trade, Islamic law

Rare moment of spiritual uplift and scholarly clarity unfolded in Banjul as Sheikh Ahmed Ould Al-Murabit, the respected Mufti of Mauritania, delivered a series of powerful lectures on Islamic rulings governing trade and usury (Riba).

His visit drew a diverse audience of scholars, students, and community members eager to benefit from his profound knowledge and balanced religious guidance.

The Mufti delivered his teachings on Saturday, 15 November 2025, at the Al-Rahman Mosque in Banjul. The gathering, marked by a spiritually charged and scholarly atmosphere, attracted the Mauritanian community in The Gambia, local Islamic scholars, students of knowledge, and admirers of the distinguished guest.

During his lecture, His Eminence explained the Islamic legal framework governing financial transactions, detailing the unlawful categories of usury and their harmful implications for commercial interactions.

He also outlined the Sharia-compliant conditions required for legitimate sales and ethical financial practices.

Sheikh Al-Murabit stressed the importance of understanding (fiqh) Islamic jurisprudence, especially for Muslims living abroad so that their daily financial activities remain aligned with Islamic principles.

He urged the community to uphold lawful earnings, noting that financial purity is essential for achieving divine blessings and moral integrity.

Beyond the lecture, the event served as an important platform for direct engagement between the Mufti and the Mauritanian community in The Gambia.

Attendees expressed profound appreciation for what they described as a blessed and timely visit, highlighting the Sheikh’s depth of knowledge, balanced approach and decades-long experience in Islamic jurisprudence and da’wah.

His lecture formed part of a broader programme of scholarly and educational activities scheduled during his visit, including engagements with religious and academic institutions.

The visit further underscored the strong religious and fraternal ties shared between Islamic Republic of Mauritania and the Republic of The Gambia.
