Honourable Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs, Seedy K.M. Keita, hosted the President of the SFD, Mr. Sultan Ben Abdulrahman Al-Marshad, and his delegation during their official visit to The Gambia from August 30 to September 1, 2026. The delegation were special guests of His Excellency President Adama Barrow.
The agreement marks a new milestone in the development partnership between The Gambia and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, reinforcing efforts to modernize road infrastructure in the Greater Banjul Area. Improved roads are expected to ease traffic congestion, enhance trade, and boost economic growth by connecting communities more efficiently.
The Greater Banjul Area has long struggled with inadequate road infrastructure. Congested traffic, poor road conditions, and limited connectivity have posed challenges for commuters, businesses, and service delivery. The 50-kilometre project, now bolstered by this new financing, promises to transform the region’s transport landscape.
Improved roads will not only ease daily travel but also stimulate economic activity by facilitating trade, reducing transport costs, and improving access to markets. For many Gambians, this project represents more than asphalt and concrete it is a pathway to opportunity and growth.
The financing agreement is part of a broader development cooperation between The Gambia and Saudi Arabia. Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs, Seedy K.M. Keita, emphasized the importance of such partnerships in advancing national development goals. The visit by Mr. Al-Marshad and his delegation, which included senior officials such as Mr. Mohammad Ben Adhan Al-Shammari and Mr. Faisal Ben Sulaiman Al-Khoushiban, provided an opportunity to explore additional areas of collaboration.
Saudi Arabia’s support through the SFD has been instrumental in funding infrastructure projects across Africa, and The Gambia’s roads initiative is a testament to the fund’s commitment to fostering sustainable development.
Beyond the immediate benefits of improved roads, the project signals The Gambia’s determination to invest in infrastructure as a foundation for long-term growth. Better connectivity will enhance tourism, attract investment, and improve access to essential services such as healthcare and education.
Minister Keita reaffirmed the government’s dedication to strengthening strategic partnerships that deliver tangible results for citizens. “This project is about improving lives, creating opportunities, and building a stronger future for The Gambia,” he noted.
