The Gambian fans who were expected to be at the opening of the Gambia’s FIFA World Cup campaign and beginning of the world event on Saturday, were delayed in Dakar Friday evening after missing their scheduled flight Royal Air Maroc.
The fans drove from Barra en route to Dakar to lodge in a local hotel in Yoff.
Headed by Gambia for Gold Chairman Tombong Saidy, the Gambian fans continued their journey to Casablanca and further to Istanbul where the fifty fan group separated into four sub groups to finally arrive in Baku.
The split according to Tombong is due to limited seat spaces available on the Turkish aircraft. The first batch arrived much earlier in Baku and followed by the rest.
The Gambian fans are lodged at SAFRAN Hotel in Baku which is ten minutes drive to the FIFA based Hotel that houses The Gambian U-17 Women and their Group opponents.
Having missed the Gambia’s opening game against Korea; fans showed their frustrations over it especially with the huge lost to the defending champions. The travelling fans knew the result of the game after jetting in Casablanca when a few of them logged into the internet to find out.
However, spirits are not totally down for The Gambian fans that are ready to storm Baku on Tuesday 25th September when the girls will take on USA in the second game. Both the USA and France drew in their opening on Saturday and The Gambia as wounded lions will prove miracles to also secure a point against one of the hottest favourites in Women football.
