Friends of The Gambia Association (Fotga) yesterday donated five trophies, fifteen medals and a cash prize of D25,480 to the Brufut Marathon Run at the ceremony held at Friends of The Gambia Association office on Manjai Highway.
Speaking on the occasion, David Smith, treasurer of Fotga, said they were pleased to contribute their quota to towards the Brufut Marathon Run this year again, adding that the donation is meant to assist the organizer to be able to stage a successful event.
He said they hope the event would start attracting international athletes from Africa and Europe and are very proud to be helping Gambians.
He also said that the collaboration between Fotga and Brufut Marathon Run started many years ago and that it is brilliant to be involved in the run.
Ba S. Jabbi, chairman of Brufut Marathon Run, said they were grateful with the gesture, adding that the donation was not something new as it has been coming over the years.
On behalf of all Gambians, he thanked Fotga through David Smith, describing the partnership as worthy.
“This is a clear manifestation of Friends of the Gambia’s commitment in supporting Gambians,” he concluded.
Mamudou Max Jallow, Executive Director of Brufut Marathon Association, called on Gambian philanthropies, NGOs and companies to emulate Fotga.
He also urged Gambians who are willing to take part in the event to train hard for it, and called on those willing to take part but are unhealthy, to seek medical advice before taking part in the event.
Mr Jallow also stated: “The 17th edition of the annual Brufut Run will take place on Saturday, 17 December 2011 in Brufut and the Greater Banjul Area.
“Races to be organized include a 21km and 10km male and female run, a 1km Elders’ Walk and a 0.5km kids race.
“The Brufut Marathon, in cooperation with the Gambia Cycling Association and the African Tourism Organisation, will launch a nationwide Awareness Raising Cycling Campaign, Against Human Trafficking and Sexual Exploitation on Tuesday 6th December 2011 at the Sheraton Hotel in Brufut.”
Yaya Camara, country rep for Fotga, also spoke at the ceremony.
