United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) recently concluded three-day capacity building for journalists on Trafficking in Person (TIP) and Smuggling of Migrants (SoM) at Metzy residence in Kololi.

At the opening, Sainey Bah, from National Human Right Commission, reminded that human trafficking and Smuggling of Migrants remains a great human right violation and urged media practitioners to desist from sensationalizing reports on these subjects and the survivors.

Sheriff Ceesay, a representative of Gambia Immigration Department (GID), who is also Head of Risk Analysis Unit, highlighted that TIP and SoM is becoming regular in The Gambia, thus it is important to build the capacity of journalists to know how to report on it perfectly.

For her part, Fatou Barry, from UNODC, underscored the crucial role journalists in combating human trafficking and smuggling of migrants.

"Journalists should take up the responsibility and use the knowledge gained to fight against these menace in the country."

In her vote of thanks, Aja Mussu Bah, a journalist from Foroyaa Newspaper, thanked the organizers of the training, assuring that they would share the knowledge gained with colleagues.

The training, she added, would also spur her to be writing more TIP and SoM stories.
