Renowned Gambian lawyer turned politician, Mr Assan Martin, leader of the People’s Alliance for Change (PAC), has called on Gambian politicians to adopt a more decent and ethical approach to politics in order to usher in system change and cleanse what he described as the “toxicity” of the current political atmosphere.

Speaking on the popular Wake Up Platform talk show on Star FM, Mr Martin stressed that political parties must review their governance strategies to serve the interests of the nation rather than narrow party agendas, adding: “We are all equal in this country. Governance should benefit the nation, not just a political party or its membership,” he said.

Mr Martin emphasised his commitment to political advocacy, noting that he would work to ensure young Gambians are politically educated so that the country can manifest political decency rather than division. He argued that the current political climate is toxic and requires urgent reform. According to him, the approaches visible in political camps do not reflect the realities of modern politics and must be reviewed to enable institutions to function effectively in the national interest.

Mr Martin further underscored the need for ethical leadership in The Gambia, saying: “What Gambia needs is leadership anchored on ethics and principles, capable of producing the results Gambians aspire to and deserve,” he stated, urging party leaders to change their outlook to reflect the will of the people.

He also called for unity among politicians, warning that hatred and the practice of “throwing shades” at one another would only impede the country’s political progress.

He concluded by renewing his call for a unified coalition to ensure system change and responsive governance, which he said are essential for building a better Gambia.
