In their bid to end the perennial challenges in accessing water, while complementing government’s efforts, The Gambia Red Cross Society (GRCS) recently inaugurated a new borehole at Tandi Barra in Sami District, Central River Region north.

Deputy governor of Central River Region, Sainey Mbye lauded the initiative and thanked GRCS for their foresight and initiative in reducing the drudgery local communities face in accessing water.

He underscored the importance of water to human survival, noting that without water there is no life.

‘‘To provide clean and a safe drinking water should be the duty of the government, but the government alone can't do everything.’’

The Chief of Sami District, Mam Demba Jallow, also commend the donor for bringing the project to his district.

‘‘Nonetheless, there are lot of villages in the district which are without clean and safe drinking water and we still need their support because water is life.’’

He thus called on the villagers to establish water committees in the area to monitor the functioning of the new borehole in the area.

He reminded that a lot of money has been spent on the project and so they should all be vigilant and take good care of the facility to serve its purpose.

Demba Sowe, Chairperson of the Gambia Red Cross Society, CRR branch, and Mr. Sulayman Manga, contractor of the project, both urged villagers to take good care of the borehole, reminding that only 15 communities were selected for the project and that their village was lucky to be part of those selected.

‘‘Cleaning the borehole environment and its maintenance should be the responsibility of everyone in the village’’ he added.

Equally, he called on the community to regularly clean the area and to avoid water contamination.

Dado Jallow, Chairperson of the Village Development Committee (VDC) equally thanked GRCS for the laudable project.

Jallow recounted some of the challenges residents faced especially students during early morning rush hour to schools and for other needs.
