Men for Equality to establish Fathers’ Clubs in URR communities

Men for Equality, a community-based organisation in The Gambia is working on plans to establish Fathers’ Clubs in all the 368 communities within the Upper River Region.

It would be recalled that after the launch of the Men for Equality in Basse, members also saw the need to establish Father’s Club in other communities within the URR.

Alagie A.F. Jallow, regional focal person for Men for Equality made this disclosure in a recent interview with reporters on the sidelines of the just concluded ChildFund annual media tour.

Commenting on the project, Jallow revealed that Fathers’ Club was established by Men for Equality, who want to expand it.

He underscored the importance of this Father’s Club, which he said, is fundamental just like Mothers’ Club.

This Fathers’ Club, he added, would look into the issues of positive masculinity, emphasising that with the societal set up and the way things are moving, and with the intervention of the fathers’ club, the narrative is changing towards people’s behaviours and gender.

“When we talk about gender role, in many cases, people think that women should do everything, but that narrative is changing simply because, Men for Equality are impacting that knowledge into the fathers’ club,” he informed.

He noted that they have different approaches that they use during advocacy, but emphasised that it is sometimes difficult in certain communities.

“So that when there are issues, they could be handled and resolved in that level,” he said.

With regards to positive masculinity, he maintained that things are gradually changing, despite challenges encountered along the way.

However, he said that Men for Equality face constraints when it comes to travelling for programme implementations, reminding that of recent, they have been doing extremely well with support from ChildFund.
