In a dynamic ceremony that embodied unity and collective ambition, the Ghanaian ECOMIG contingent and Gambian authorities recently officially inaugurated the expanded Banjul Barra Ferry Terminal Mosque.

Officials said this initiative represents a pivotal achievement in fostering cross-border collaboration and promoting interfaith harmony.

Ghana's Lt. Col. Abraham Pourigelle Dery led the initiative to transform a humble worship space into a spacious sanctuary, designed to accommodate the expanding Muslim community at the terminal. This visionary project also aimed to strengthen the diplomatic relationship between Ghana and The Gambia.

The project commenced in July 2023, when Lt. Col. Dery visited the terminal and engaged in conversations with ferry director Manjang about the community's needs. During this visit, he observed the mosque’s limited capacity while exploring his passion project—his paintings.

During the Ramadan inauguration, Dery expressed his commitment to expanding the structure, emphasising: “This isn’t merely bricks and mortar; it embodies our collective values of peace, solidarity, and mutual respect.”

Abdoulie Tambedou, the Manager of Gambia Ferry Services commended the Ghanaian team for their prompt execution of the project, which was accomplished in less than a year despite facing logistical challenges, saying: “The before and after photos tell a powerful story,” he noted, expressing his commitment to safeguarding the mosque as a “spiritual heirloom.”

Albert Ospona was honored for his pivotal role in facilitating roofing improvements and ensuring ambulance access, significantly contributing to an efficient construction process.

Defence Minister Sering Modou Njie emphasised the project's dual importance: strengthening diplomatic ties and embodying the Islamic principle of 'Sadaqah Jariyah' (enduring charity).

He referenced the teachings of Prophet Muhammad, highlighting that “the construction of a mosque blesses future generations—each prayer here resonates eternally for its benefactors.”

The minister also highlighted the significance of the collaborative efforts between Ghana and Gambia, underscoring their role in fostering regional stability through community-driven initiatives.

As evening settled in, the melodic call to prayer echoed through the terminal, symbolising not just a structural achievement but also a beacon of hope.

“The mosque stands as a testament to collective spirit and unity,” remarked local imam Kebba Fofana.

“It’s proof that when nations collaborate, communities thrive,” he said, noting that with pledges to replicate such projects, Ghana and Gambia reaffirm their commitment to a future built on shared faith and mutual progress.
