China, Slovakia deepen strategic partnership

The talks took place at the Great Hall of the People on Tuesday, 28 July 2026, during President Pellegrini’s state visit to China.

According to Xinhua News Agency, President Xi said China was ready to work closely with Slovakia to forge a strategic partnership founded on mutual respect and trust, equality and mutual benefit, as well as stability and resilience.

Xi noted that mutual respect for each country’s development path and a firm commitment to friendship and cooperation had provided a solid foundation for the sound and rapid growth of China-Slovakia relations.

He commended Slovakia for upholding the one-China principle and said China would continue to work with Slovakia to accommodate each other’s core interests and major concerns.

The Chinese leader called on both countries to explore greater opportunities for cooperation in emerging industries and frontier technologies, including clean energy, the digital economy, robotics and artificial intelligence, with the aim of creating new areas of growth in bilateral relations.

Xi also urged the two countries to broaden exchanges in culture, sports, tourism, youth development and subnational cooperation. He further called for measures to make travel and people-to-people exchanges between China and Slovakia more convenient.

On international affairs, President Xi said China and Slovakia should jointly safeguard the United Nations-centred international system and the international order underpinned by international law.

He said the two countries should promote an equal and orderly multipolar world and universally support beneficial and inclusive economic globalisation while contributing to the building of a community with a shared future for humanity.

Xi also reiterated that China views the European Union as a partner and develops its relations with the bloc with sincerity and goodwill.

He called on Slovakia to play a constructive role in promoting the sound and steady development of relations between China and the European Union.

For his part, President Pellegrini said Slovakia highly values its strategic partnership with China and looks forward to achieving more concrete results in economic and trade cooperation.

He identified artificial intelligence, the digital economy, robotics and new energy as key areas with strong potential for expanded collaboration.

Pellegrini also welcomed greater investment by Chinese enterprises in Slovakia.

As a member state of the European Union, he said Slovakia was willing to actively promote cooperation between the EU and China and support the peaceful settlement of differences through dialogue and consultation.

“Slovakia is willing to work with China to uphold multilateralism, safeguard the purposes of the UN Charter and international law, and promote regional and world peace and stability,” Pellegrini said.

He added that Slovakia was prepared to strengthen coordination with China on improving global governance of artificial intelligence.

The meeting underscored the growing importance both countries attach to expanding economic, technological and diplomatic cooperation amid evolving global political and economic developments.
