Gambian students in Russia host annual Student Week

The Union of Gambian Students in Russia recently began its much-anticipated annual student week, a platform for students to connect, build bonds, create networks, and reflect on their academic journeys over the years.

The event, which lasts from 1st to 4th January 2024, serves as an unforgettable occasion filled with engaging activities, insightful discussions, and opportunities for Gambian students to forge lasting connections. It also serves as a testament to the unity and strength of the student union in Russia and their commitment to academic excellence and personal growth.

The opening day of this year's student week witnessed the presence of Gambia’s Ambassador to Russia, Ebrima Ceesay, accompanied by his wife. In attendance was Retired General Langtombong Tamba, the deputy ambassador and Ansumana Ceesay, the financial attaché to the embassy.

Welcoming the gathering, Bakary S. Sonko, president of the Union of Gambian Students in Russia, extended warm gratitude to the embassy and its staff for their unwavering support in making the gathering possible.

Sonko while underscoring the importance of the annual gathering, reminded that the week also serves as a vital platform for Gambian students to come together, foster unity, and seek continued support from the embassy in their academic pursuits.

In his opening remarks, General Langtombong Tamba, expressed appreciation for the warm invitation extended to the entire student body.

He equally acknowledged the importance the embassy places on the affairs and well-being of Gambian students in Russia.

For his part, Ebrima Ceesay, Gambia’s ambassador to Russia, expressed delight to be part of the event, while highlighting some of the challenges students face while studying abroad.

Ambassador Ceesay emphasised the continuous and unwavering support from his office and the government of The Gambia. He encouraged students to seize the opportunities available to them, to learn as much as possible, and to return to their homeland with the knowledge and skills acquired to contribute to the development of The Gambia.
