The draft document, which outlines The Gambia’s updated commitments under the Paris Agreement, was reviewed by government institutions, development partners, civil society, and other stakeholders before its submission to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, UNFCCC.
Permanent Secretary Ebrima Jawara said NDC 3.0 is more than a climate document.
“This NDC underpins our development aspirations, our financing strategy, as well as our investment,” he said.
He noted that the validation was key to resolving outstanding technical and policy issues, confirming institutional roles, and ensuring financing and implementation plans were properly reflected.
PS Jawara added that NDC 3.0 was developed differently from the 2016 and 2021 versions, with broader participation. More than 300 people were consulted nationwide during the year-long process.
Clarine, Climate Advisor at UNEP, said the draft was evidence-based and built on demanding technical work and extensive consultations. She urged stakeholders to provide input to ensure it reflects national priorities.
Deputy Permanent Secretary Ansumana Sanneh of the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs said the NDC should be treated as an investment and development agenda, not just an international obligation.
He highlighted priority areas including agriculture, energy, water, forests, and infrastructure.
With the validation complete, MECCNAR will now finalize NDC 3.0 for endorsement and submission to the UNFCCC.
