The leadership of the Gambia Association of Local Government Authorities (GALGA) has commenced a five-day capacity-building programme on governance and leadership in Mansakonko, Lower River Region.

Supported by the EU-UNDP GREAT Project, the training is designed to strengthen the skills and competencies of local government officials, with a focus on transparency, accountability and participatory decision-making. The initiative aims to enhance the effectiveness and responsiveness of local authorities within The Gambia’s decentralisation framework.

Opening the training, GALGA President Mahamadou Ceesay emphasised that effective governance and strong leadership are the backbone of sustainable development at the local level.

“As local government leaders, our ability to lead with integrity, transparency and vision directly impacts the lives of our communities. This training is designed to equip us with the skills, knowledge and tools necessary to navigate the complexities of governance and to lead our councils effectively,” he said.

Mr Ceesay encouraged chairpersons and chief executive officers to actively engage, share experiences and learn from one another during the sessions, noting that the insights gained would empower them to better serve their communities and uphold the principles of good governance. He commended the EU-UNDP GREAT Project for its support, describing investment in local leadership as a catalyst for positive change.

James Monibah, Project Manager of the EU-UNDP GREAT Project, underscored the importance of capacity building in local governance.

“This engagement is both timely and strategic. As The Gambia continues to implement the recovery-focused National Development Plan, local government institutions remain central to translating national development priorities into tangible improvements in the lives of citizens,” he stated.

Mr Monibah added that the training would provide participants with practical tools to enhance strategic leadership, institutional performance, public financial management and inclusive decision-making.

Amadou Jallow, Programmes Manager of GALGA, outlined the specific objectives of the programme, which include strengthening leadership and governance skills, improving service delivery, and fostering accountability and transparency.

“This training will concentrate on areas such as strategic planning, financial management and community engagement. We anticipate that our leaders will return equipped with new insights and strategies that will empower them to create a meaningful impact in their communities,” he said.
