The Abubarr Siddique Foundation for Needy and Orphan Welfare (AFNOW) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting vulnerable communities after revealing that it spent more than D400,000 in 2025 on humanitarian interventions targeting orphans, widows, and needy families in Gunjur and surrounding communities.

The disclosure was made during the Foundation’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), recently held at its office in Gunjur, Kombo South, bringing together executive members, beneficiaries, community leaders, donor partners, and representatives of affiliated organisations.

The AGM served as a platform for the Foundation’s executive to present its annual activities and financial performance, highlighting a year marked by expanded social welfare support despite persistent funding and capacity challenges.

Presenting the annual report, AFNOW officials outlined a range of interventions carried out in 2025, including the sponsorship of vulnerable students in both Arabic and English schools, distribution of food items to needy households, and provision of cash support during Koriteh as well as meat distribution to families during Tobaski.

The Foundation also supported orphaned students with educational materials including stationery, while investing in sustainability through the construction of a stationery shop, designed as an income-generating venture to support AFNOW’s long-term welfare programmes.

However, the executives noted that the organisation continues to face significant challenges, chief among them inadequate funding and a shortage of volunteers to support its expanding humanitarian operations.

They appealed to donors, philanthropists, institutions, and the general public to strengthen partnerships with AFNOW, stressing that increased collaboration is essential to expanding the Foundation’s reach and impact among vulnerable populations.

AFNOW further acknowledged the support of its key partners, including the African Network Against Enforced Disappearances (ANEKED), ATAFIA, Child Protection Alliance, Gunjur Village Development Committee (VDC), Gunjur Development Fund (GDF), and the Gunjur Sports Committee (GSC), describing these partnerships as critical to the success of its programmes.

The AGM was attended by several prominent community and religious leaders, including the Imam Ratib of Gunjur, Sheikh Mohammad Lamin Touray, the Alikalo of Gunjur, Dembo Darboe, Gunjur Ward Councillor, Hon. Momodou Charreh Gibba, and a representative of the Kombo South Chief, Yaya Drammeh, all of whom commended the Foundation for its grassroots-driven humanitarian work.

AFNOW officials pledged to deepen transparency, strengthen accountability, and expand lifesaving interventions for orphans and vulnerable families as the organisation moves into its next operational year.
