The initiative, carried out in August 2026, was implemented through a partnership between the Honourable Councillor for Tallinding North, Baboucarr Mansally, and Asociación Benéfica ONG Ser Humano, a charitable organisation based in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain.
A total of 200 beds and mattresses were distributed to selected beneficiaries. According to the organisers, 60 sets were specifically purchased for the project, while the remaining 140 were donated in Spain before being made available to families in Tallinding North.
The intervention, organisers said, goes beyond providing basic household items, as access to a proper bed and mattress can contribute significantly to the comfort, wellbeing and dignity of families, particularly those facing difficult living conditions.
“The initiative represents much more than the distribution of basic sleeping equipment,” the organisers said, stressing that having a bed and mattress in suitable condition can make a direct difference in the daily lives of families.
For many beneficiaries, the support provides an opportunity to improve their homes with essential items that may otherwise be difficult to afford. The organisers said the initiative demonstrates the importance of ensuring that international cooperation translates into tangible benefits for people at the community level.
Councillor Mansally and Asociación Benéfica ONG Ser Humano expressed their appreciation to the Cabildo de Gran Canaria for its commitment, solidarity and support towards families in Tallinding North.
They also highlighted the importance of strengthening existing ties between The Gambia and the Canary Islands, noting that partnerships involving local authorities, charitable organisations and communities can play an important role in addressing household-level needs.
For ONG Ser Humano, the initiative forms part of its broader commitment to international cooperation and efforts to improve living conditions among communities in The Gambia.
The organisation noted that the donations were made possible through the collective efforts of individuals and institutions in Spain, particularly in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, who contributed towards the initiative.
The organisers said the project demonstrates that humanitarian cooperation can have a direct and meaningful impact when resources are channelled towards the practical needs of families.
“When cooperation reaches people directly, it is transformed into wellbeing, dignity and new opportunities,” the organisation said.
Both Councillor Mansally and ONG Ser Humano reiterated their gratitude to the Cabildo de Gran Canaria and all those who contributed to the initiative, expressing hope that similar partnerships will continue to support communities and improve the living conditions of vulnerable families in The Gambia.
