Press Release

The Government of The Gambia has observed with deep concern, the rapid increase in the number of people attempting to travel to Europe by sea using the Gambia as a lunch path. This situation prompts the activation of special operation units to decisively respond under the Ministry of Interior.

Accordingly, the Gambia Immigration Department and the Gambia Police Force engaged in various intelligence-led enforcement activities targeting hotspot areas resulting in the interception of 782 intending migrants and the arrest of 4 suspects/organisers. The incepted groups comprise nationals of different West African countries.

These are  Senegalese – 233, Gambians -197, Guineans – 176, Malian – 148, Ivorians – 16, Nigerians – 6, Mauritanians – 2, Bissau Guinean – 1, Liberian – 1, and Ghanaian -1.

The Ministry would like to thank the members of the public who volunteered critical information leading to successful interceptions. Their support contributed greatly to law enforcement efforts against criminals behind the human trafficking and/or smuggling of vulnerable people. This demonstrates a sense of collective responsibility and positive national spirit in addressing emerging social challenges.

On the rescue efforts of the boat which capsized on 1st January 2026, efforts are ongoing to account for everyone involved in this tragic event and to support the families. However, the Ministry has observed with serious concern the indiscriminate publication of images of dead bodies without the consent of their respective families. This insensitive and inhuman act is deplored and strongly condemned. Both the media and the public are strongly warned to seize and desist forthwith from this practice.

The Government reaffirms its commitment to protecting the lives of citizens and safeguarding security of everyone resident in the Gambia. Meanwhile, the public is encouraged to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious activities to the law enforcement authorities.
