The tour commenced at Serrekunda Market, where the delegation observed poor sanitation conditions, with vendors operating amid accumulated waste and filth. Market traders expressed frustration over what they described as neglect by the Kanifing Municipal Council, despite their regular payment of daily duties and other fees.
During the inspection, a KMC waste collection truck was seen clearing accumulated waste at Sandika. However, vendors insisted that the Council must adopt a more robust and consistent waste management mechanism, noting that the persistent bad odour from uncollected waste has become unbearable.
The inspection tour is expected to continue in Latrikunda, along the Coastal Road, and in Brikama, as authorities engage with vendors on ways to improve cleanliness and strengthen waste management systems.
Vendors urged the authorities to prioritize sanitation in markets, stressing that a cleaner environment is essential for both traders and customers. They called for stronger waste collection services to ensure healthier trading spaces and restore public confidence in market hygiene.
Speaking to the media during the inspection, Environment Minister Rohey John Manjang said she was devastated and saddened by the conditions observed at the markets, while acknowledging concerns over the failure of local councils to adequately maintain the facilities despite collecting revenues from vendors.
She assured that the Central Government would engage the councils to develop a robust and practical plan to address the sanitation challenges.
