“Investment in improving access to the area provides an opportunity to unlock even greater economic potential for the nation,” he said. “For the inhabitants of Sanyang, this new road opens a new chapter in the development of this community, with its proud history, hardworking population, and enormous potential to tap,” he said.
The road was constructed as a component of EPC Lot 9 under the government’s nationwide road development programme.
President Barrow said the project extends beyond Sanyang, forming part of the broader development of the coastal corridor.
“As The Gambia prepares for the development of the upcoming Deep-Sea Port, the importance of reliable road infrastructure connecting our coastal communities, economic centres, and strategic assets will become greater,” he said.
Barrow emphasized that roads built today “must anticipate the demands of tomorrow” to support increasing trade, investment, tourism, and economic activity.
“We are confident that the completion of the Sanyang Beach Side Road will massively improve access to the coastal area, facilitate the movement of people and goods, and create better conditions for businesses and investment,” the President stated.
The Gambian President added that farmers, fishermen, traders and entrepreneurs will benefit, while young people and women will have more opportunities.
The road will also make Sanyang’s coastal attractions “more lucratively accessible to visitors.”
“Our coastline is becoming increasingly important to the future of The Gambia. Besides being a source of livelihoods and tourism, it has the potential to become an important gateway for trade, investment, and regional economic activity,” Barrow said.
The President stressed that development must be managed responsibly. As investment increases along the coast, he said, “we must protect our environment, manage the development process carefully, and ensure that local communities are active participants in and beneficiaries of the opportunities created.
Barrow urged residents to preserve the infrastructure and appealed to all road users to observe traffic regulations and respect pedestrians.
“The lifespan of our infrastructure depends both on the quality of its construction and how responsibly we use and protect every aspect of it,” he said.
President Barrow said the real value of the road will be measured “by the businesses it supports, the investments it generates, the visitors it attracts, the goods that reach new markets, and the opportunities that our young people and women will utilise.”
Barrow called on the private sector, entrepreneurs and communities to seize the opportunities, while the government continues to provide the enabling environment.
The President commended the Ministry of Transport, Works and Infrastructure, the National Roads Authority, the contractor, engineers and all stakeholders for the successful completion of the project. He also thanked traditional leaders, local authorities and residents of Sanyang for their cooperation.
President Barrow then officially declared the Sanyang Beach Side Road open to the public.
