The British High Commission in collaboration with the Government of The Gambia recently hosted a grand reception in Banjul to celebrate the official birthday of His Majesty King Charles III.

The event brought together senior government officials, diplomats, and friends of the United Kingdom to honour the strong and enduring ties between The Gambia and the UK, built on shared history, mutual respect, and a vision for a brighter and healthier future.

The British High Commissioner to The Gambia, Harriet King, speaking at the event, highlighted that the celebration also reflected the deep and lasting friendship between the two nations. She said the relationship continues to thrive on shared values, cooperation, and a commitment to progress.

This year’s King’s Birthday Party, she noted, was celebrated under the theme: ‘Health and Wellbeing’, a theme that mirrors the shared priorities of both countries.

Good health is the foundation of prosperity, and wellbeing is the measure of a thriving society,” she said, adding that the UK remains dedicated to supporting initiatives that improve health outcomes and resilience in The Gambia.

She cited ongoing collaborations with the Medical Research Council, Horizons Trust, civil society organisations, and UN partners as examples of the UK’s investment in women’s health and rights.

“We are committed to building a healthier and more resilient Gambia and will continue to explore partnerships that promote wellbeing for all,” she affirmed.

High Commissioner King further expressed her commitment to working with The Gambia in areas of health, education, and the empowerment of women and girls. She emphasised the importance of maintaining honest and equitable partnerships that deliver sustainable and measurable impact.

Turning to economic cooperation, she underscored The Gambia’s rich tourism potential and encouraged investment and trade partnerships that would unlock new opportunities for growth and shared prosperity.

The Foreign Affairs Minister Sering Modou Njie also addressed the gathering, describing the celebration as a symbol of the enduring friendship and mutual respect that define the Gambia–UK relationship.

He observed that the partnership between the two nations has continued to strengthen over the years, particularly in sectors such as education, health, governance, security, climate action, and sustainable development.

Minister Njie commended the UK’s steadfast support for The Gambia’s democratic transition, institutional reforms, and youth empowerment. He particularly highlighted initiatives such as the Chevening Scholarship Programme, which has enabled many young Gambians to study abroad and return home to contribute to national development.

He also lauded King Charles III’s personal commitment to global causes such as environmental protection, sustainable agriculture, interfaith harmony, and youth development.

The minister reaffirmed The Gambia’s readiness to continue working closely with the United Kingdom and the wider Commonwealth to advance shared priorities from accelerating climate adaptation and fostering inclusive economic growth to ensuring that development benefits reach all Gambians.
