EU, UN launch €3.8M migrants project

The European Union, United Nations, and key partners have launched a €3.8 million initiative to address migration challenges in The Gambia.

The initiative targets over 30,000 migrants and benefits approximately 340 individuals directly through skill enhancement and community contributions. Key partners include the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), Enabel, and the Gambia Red Cross Society (GRCS). This collaborative effort aims to transform migration challenges into opportunities for growth and inclusion in The Gambia.

Mr. Ebou Faye Njie, secretary general of The Gambia Red Cross Society (GRCS), said GRCS was committed to an inclusive approach in addressing migration challenges.

By establishing safe shelters, referral systems, and coaching mechanisms, the project aims to protect vulnerable individuals, especially children. 

He noted that the project's focus on inclusivity and community engagement can help address the complex migration dynamics in The Gambia, promoting sustainable development and social stability.

UN Resident Coordinator Karl Frederick Paul, emphasised the United Nations' commitment to supporting The Gambia's development efforts. 

According to him, the project aims to empower returnees through community-based reintegration and mental health support and to strengthen institutional capacities by enhancing sustainable reintegration and development.

He indicated that the programme aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework, ensuring a comprehensive approach to addressing The Gambia's development needs.

EU Ambassador Mrs. Imma Roca I Cortes, highlighted the shared commitment between the European Union and the Gambian government to address migration challenges. 

She said the project would protect human dignity to ensure that migration is managed in a way that respects human rights and creates hope for the future.

She highlighted the comprehensive response, by addressing all dimensions of migration, including prevention of trafficking and smuggling, irregular migration, border management, protection of migrants, and promotion of safe and legal pathways.

She emphasised on implementing international conventions to guarantee safe return and reintegration for those who choose to return or are in an irregular situation.

However, she said this collaborative effort aims to promote a humane and sustainable approach to migration management.

Gambia's Foreign Affairs Minister, Sering Modou Njie, emphasised the country's commitment to strengthening governance enhancing systems to manage migration effectively.

He said the government will ensure migration contributes to the country's growth and well-being by fostering unity and inclusion among Gambians.

According to Foreign Affairs Minister Njie, this initiative demonstrates a proactive approach to transforming migration challenges into opportunities for growth, development, and social cohesion in The Gambia.
