The coronation of Charles III and his wife, Camilla, as king and queen of the United Kingdom and the other Commonwealth realms, took place on 6 May 2023 at Westminster Abbey. Charles acceded to the throne on 8 September 2022, upon the death of his mother, Elizabeth II.
The event held at the High Commission's ground attracted a cross-section of Gambians in different government institutions and respectable citizens. Gambians celebrated the moment with enjoy and applauding the vital role played by the Embassy in the development of the country.
Speaking at the occasion, David Belgrove, UK High Commissioner elaborated on the significance of the day while thanking the government of the Gambia and the people for rejoicing with the commission. He emphasized that this has been a tradition in the past.
He applauded The Gambia for the new era of democracy by cherishing the best practices and upholding human rights both domestically and internationally.
On behalf of the President, Sering Modou Njie, Defence Minister also extended his gratitude and appreciation to the High Commisioner and the entire people of the United Kingdom.
Njie was quick to dwell on the close partnership between the Gambia and UK while reiterating the government's stance on further consolidating the existing bond. Njie was also pleased to associate himself with such an important gathering in the history of the United Kingdom, saying "We are glad to gather and celebrate the coronation with you."
In a speech, Minister Njie concluded by praying for the late Queen Elizabeth and Gambian granny for their souls to rest in peace. He also hailed the late queen's contribution to building the existing relationship between the two countries.
