Hamat N.K. Bah, the minister for Lands, Regional Government and Religious Affairs has called on municipalities and councils to provide allowances for Islamic leaders, particularly Imam Ratibs, who he said play vital roles in religious and community life.

He made these remarks during an event organised by the Pipeline Mosque Foundation, where a new funeral van valued at over 2.3 million dalasis was unveiled.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Bah praised the efforts of the Pipeline Mosque Foundation for their commitment to serving the community. He emphasised the invaluable contributions of Islamic leaders, noting that Imam Ratibs often officiate religious ceremonies and provide spiritual guidance without financial compensation.

“Imam Ratibs attend countless Islamic functions, offering their time and wisdom, yet they receive no financial support. Meanwhile, alkalolu are earning salaries for their administrative roles. It is high time municipalities consider giving allowances to our Imam Ratibs,” he stated.

The minister urged municipal authorities to prioritise financial support for these leaders, recognising their essential role in fostering unity and upholding cultural and religious values.

The event, which was attended by religious leaders, community members, and dignitaries, highlighted the importance of supporting initiatives that benefit the public, such as the funeral van donation, while also sparking discussions on broader support for Islamic leaders in the country.
