The commission’s two year term will end on April 27th 2027.
Speaking at the launching ceremony, the president of SJAG, Omar Jarju, stated that SJAG was honoured to launch Women’s Sports Reporters Commission.
Jarju further stated that the launching of Women’s Sports Commission was a momentous occasion for SJAG executive, adding that they were driving towards promoting gender equality in sports reporting.
He revealed that SJAG Women’s Sports Reporters Commission would not only provide support and resources to their female colleagues.
Jarju further revealed that the commission would help to elevate and amplify their voices in sports journalists’ field that is dominated by male.
He added that there is a need to improve determined and committed young women sport reporters to realise their dreams.
“I am very happy to see the positive impact that this commission has on our industry,” Jarju said.
Jarju also expressed delight about this historic moment as the president of SJAG.
He thanked his executive for joining their hands together to improve the women’s sports reporters.
Jarju urged SJAG Women’s Sports Reporters Commission to make best use of the opportunity given to them.
He revealed that the reason of establishing the commission is to give room to have a great representation.
Jarju pointed that they have the power to conquer and power to change the narratives to be part of the decision-making processes in sports development in the country, continent and global level.
Advocacy and Fundraising officer at the National Sports Council (NYC), Ida Bah, applauded Sports Journalist Association of The Gambia for coming with Women’s Sports Reporters Commission.
Ms Bah urged women’s sports reporters to network locally and internationally.
Bah urged Women’s Sports Commission not to compromise themselves as female reporters.
He pointed out that the role of female reporters is very huge, adding that they can even go to elsewhere whereas their male colleagues might not go.
National Assembly Member for Banjul South Constituency, Hon. Touma Njai, commended the leadership of SJAG for establishing Women’s Sports Reports Commission.
“It is important to have women in sports leadership, when they hold leadership positions the diversity and inclusion bring better decision making,” she said.
“We are all home makers. We have full time job and full time job at home,” Njai said.
