The celebration forms part of the global observance of the Day, a moment used worldwide to highlight the achievements of women while drawing attention to the barriers that still exist.
Within the security sector, the day also serves as a reminder of the critical role women continue to play in peacekeeping, leadership, and community engagement, despite working in environments often dominated by men.
Addressing the gathering, Her Excellency Miatta Lilly French, head of ECOWAS Mission in The Gambia, calls for openness among women in uniform to share experiences and support one another.
She acknowledged the difficulties of entering and thriving in the security field, describing it as a space that requires determination and resilience.
The ECOWAS head of mission urged women to build each other up and make the path easier for those coming after them.
She further reaffirmed ECOMIG’s commitment to promoting gender equality, saying empowering women is not only about fairness, but also essential for effective institutions and sustainable peace.
Madam Hulay Jallow, Deputy Director General of Immigration Department, shared a detailed account of her journey, describing years of service across operational, tactical, and strategic levels within the Gambia Immigration Department.
She highlighted significant progress made in gender representation, acknowledging that women now make up 73% of the department, with many occupying key leadership positions.
She however highlighted some of the challenges women in uniform faced, including stereotypes and the demands of balancing professional and personal responsibilities, but stressed that such experiences strengthen resilience and leadership.
Drawing from her time in international missions, she shared moments of hardship and sacrifice, emphasising the importance of courage, commitment, and faith in overcoming obstacles.
Captain Victoria Galley, speaking on behalf of the participants emphasised the significance of the gathering, noting that it was not only a celebration but also a time to recognise the strength, resilience, and professionalism of women in uniform.
The event wrapped up with a shared call for continued collaboration and determination, as participants reflected on the progress made and the work still needed to ensure equal opportunities for women across all sectors.
