Speaking on behalf of President Adama Barrow at the 21st Extraordinary Session of the AU Assembly in Luanda, Angola, VP Jallow said Africa must shift from managing crises to preventing them.
The summit brought together AU Chairperson and President of Burundi H.E. Evariste Ndayishimiye, host President of Angola H.E. João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço, and AU Commission Chairperson H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf.
VP Jallow commended the AU Commission Chairperson for efforts to strengthen conflict prevention and resolution mechanisms. He also praised President Lourenço for his leadership in preventive diplomacy and mediation.
Addressing the security situation, the Vice President noted that the Sahel remains highly vulnerable, while other crises across the continent continue to cause immense human suffering.
He urged all AU Member States and Regional Economic Communities to move beyond crisis management toward a coordinated response that embeds peacebuilding at every stage of development.
“This must be backed by adequate and predictable financing for peacebuilding,” he said. “And it must include the full and meaningful participation of women and youth in peace processes.”
VP Jallow reaffirmed The Gambia’s commitment to continental peace efforts, stating that making peace more rewarding than conflict will position African nations as “the architects of the Africa We Want.”
The Gambian delegation attended the Luanda summit as part of continued national engagement in AU efforts on conflict prevention and resolution.
