The president of The Gambia Press Union (GPU) has acknowledged the remarkable contribution of The Point in the country’s media landscape, with the launch of the PointApp while acknowledging that the paper doesn’t practice yellow journalism, rather it speaks truth in good faith.

Muhammed S. Bah was speaking on Friday during activities commemorating the 32-anniversary of the paper and the 19th anniversary of the assassination of prominent Gambian journalist- Deyda Hydara, co-proprietor of The Point.

“There is a real transformation in terms of the contents of the newspaper, the outlook and the consistency in terms of publications, especially the column called “Good Morning Mr. President!.” he said.

On his admiration of the paper, Bah maintained that the paper doesn’t practice yellow journalism, adding that they also make the paper speaks the truth in good faith and in the public interest.

“I think that trend should continue.” Bah stated.

He thus advised his colleagues at the paper to always look up to people like Pap Saine, a veteran Gambian journalist and co-publisher of the paper.

He thus commended the staff for their dedication, acknowledging that Pap Saine knows the media landscape to his fingertips.

On the paper launch of a mobile app, Bah commended the paper as the launch of this new initiative would help attract young people, who are mainly obsessed with mobile phones and the digital space.

With the launch of the new app, which is accessible on www.thepoint.gm/app, he said the paper will now compete both online and offline.

To that end, he commended Baba Hydara- the brain behind the initiative, for the foresight and smart approach in initiating such development as the world embraces digital revolution.

The mobile, he said, is the first of its kind in the Gambia’s media landscape.

Also speaking, Bekai Njie, the Editor-In-Chief of the paper said they don’t just break news because they want to become the first to break it, but they break it if it is necessary.

On digital transformation taking shape across the world, Njie reminded that digital transformation isn’t an easy thing not only here in The Gambia, but across the globe.

“Digital transformation requires a huge investment and this was just the beginning.”
