In a move designed to promote sustainability and ensure self-reliance, Tida Ceesay, a tenth-time beneficiary of Nafa Cash Transfer project has shared with the project officials, how her profits enabled her to venture into animal husbandry.

She made this disclosure when officials paid a courtesy visit at her home village of Nyakoi in the Upper River Region on Saturday, 23rd November 2024.

The Nafa Cash Transfer project was spearheaded by the National Nutrition Agency (NaNA), Department of Community Development and Directorate of Social Welfare in collaboration with The Gambia Resilience, Inclusion, Skills and Equity (RISE). The World Bank funded programme, is a combination of Cash Transfer and Social and Behavioural Change Communication (SBCC) that is being implemented in rural districts.

The programme was designed to support those identified as extremely poor households in rural communities.

After receiving her recent cash transfer, Tida Ceesay, told journalists that this was the tenth time she had benefited from the cash transfer, describing the programme as helpful especially at the household level.

“I decided to inject part of the money from the previous cash transfer programmes to buying 6 goats, but unfortunately, two of the goats have died due to diseases. But I believe that if the remaining goats reproduce in the future, it will surely help me a lot.” she added.

She spoke highly of this animal husbandry project, sounding optimistic about the benefit she stands to achieve as she looks into the future.

Apart from venturing into animal farming, she explained that she was able to take care of her children’s education and health-related matters from the money received.

From the look of things, she remains optimistic that even in the event the programme ends, she will be able to continue with her animal husbandry project.

She, thus thanked the National Nutrition Agency (NANA) and its partners for what she described as ‘lifetime support’, saying cash transfer intervention came as a groundbreaking initiative as it uplifted her family to another level.

In a similar testimony, Alhagie Sima, a native of Taibatou, Wuli Distrcit in the Upper River Region (URR), and a husband to one of the beneficiaries, commended stakeholders for recognising and remembering them as part of the extreme poor households in the country.

Sima revealed that after his wife received her payment from the Nafa Cash Transfer, they decided to open a bank account where they saved part of the money, while they used part of it for family upkeep.

In a same vein, 58 beneficiaries from Fantumbung village in the Upper River Region, also received their Cash Transfer payments on Saturday 23rd November 2024, where each individual received D3000.
