The Executive Director of the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA), Saikou Jeng, has reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to supporting initiatives that promote youth empowerment and environmental sustainability, describing young people as key drivers of national development.

Mr. Jeng made the remarks during a courtesy visit by executive members of the University of The Gambia Students’ Union (UTGSU), who are engaging stakeholders ahead of the institution’s annual Students’ Week celebration.

The Students’ Week is one of the university’s flagship events, bringing together students through a series of activities, including community sensitisation campaigns, research initiatives and programmes designed to promote leadership, civic responsibility and community service.

During the meeting, the UTGSU delegation briefed the NSPA leadership on the objectives of this year’s programme, highlighting its focus on youth leadership, community engagement and national development. They also appealed for support to ensure the successful implementation of the week-long activities.

Discussions centred on possible areas of collaboration, including financial and technical assistance, capacity-building opportunities and partnerships that would strengthen the impact of the programme. Particular emphasis was placed on environmental sustainability initiatives, reflecting the growing role of young people in addressing climate and environmental challenges.

Responding to the presentation, Mr. Jeng assured the student leaders of the agency’s willingness to partner with initiatives that empower young people and contribute to sustainable national development.

He reiterated that the NSPA remains committed to supporting programmes that equip young people with the skills, knowledge and opportunities needed to become active contributors to the country’s socio-economic development.

As part of their stakeholder engagement campaign, the UTGSU delegation also visited Kolomoni Microfinance, where they held discussions with management on potential collaboration for the Students’ Week activities.

Speaking during the meeting, Kolomoni Microfinance’s Product Marketing Manager, Joseph Falodum, expressed the institution’s readiness to work with the students and support the successful organisation of the annual event.

The stakeholder engagement forms part of the Students’Union efforts to build partnerships with public and private institutions in preparation for this year’s Students’Week, which is expected to bring together students, community members and development partners in activities that promote innovation, volunteerism and national development.
