Built in 1991, Faji Kunda Health Centre is situated in Western Health One, the biggest health region in the country with population of over one million inhabitants from all the seven administrative regions of the country.
At the ceremony, Adou Sanneh, administrator at the Faji Kunda Health Centre, reminded that the centre was built in 1991 and has since played a key role and offers quality health service to the people in the area.
He informed that the centre is currently serving 10 catchment areas with over 315,515 inhabitants comprising different nationalities and people of different ethnicity.
The centre, he added, provides both preventive and curative health services within and outside its catchments areas.
“The facility seeks to provide services that are of good quality to these settlements and The Gambia populace at large. The facility has different units all of which performed distinctive services to meet the health care need of the people.”
Sanneh also revealed that the facility has an annual expected birth rate of 4194 live births and 350 live births on monthly basis.
For his part, Alagie Sankareh, Regional Health Director, Western One, applauded the donors for the support, saying the expansion of the maternity ward was long overdue.
“Today we are witnessing yet another expansion in the annals of the Ministry of Health in trying to provide quality health care services to the people of The Gambia.”
The facility, he added, is strategically located in Western Health One, the biggest health region in the country with a growing population of over one million inhabitants coming from all the seven administrative regions of the country.
Sankareh acknowledged that the new maternity ward would significantly improve quality health care service at the centre, saying infrastructure is a key pillar in supporting the fundamental aims of providing quality health care services to the patients and staff who work at the centre.
Also speaking, Ramatoulie Beyai, sponsor, who was short of words, expressed appreciation with the reception accorded her and delegation.
She said that growing as a youngster in the community; she felt the nightmare some women had undergone in accessing reproductive health care services in the country.
She encouraged men to always accompany their partners in accessing reproductive health care, noting that experiencing labour as a woman is a difficult task.
Ramatoulie Camara-Daye, Officer-In-Charge of Faji Kunda Health Centre, expressed delight to be associated with the event, acknowledging that significant achievements have been registered at the centre over the past years.
“Indeed, I am proud and I know my staff are proud too because in years to come wherever we are, we will all be proud to say this achievement was done at the facility during our time. So, I thank God for that.”
To the sponsors, Madam Camara-Daye expressed hearty felicitation and prayed that God Almighty continues to bless, guide and protect them wherever they are.
“This is your home and your native land and we will continue to knock on your doors.”
She thanked all those who played a part in making the facility a conducive place to deliver.
