The President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission, Dr Omar Alieu Touray, has called on world leaders to work towards a sustainable, inclusive, and resilient global economy.

He made the appeal during the inaugural biennial summit for a Sustainable, Inclusive and Resilient Global Economy, held on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York on 24 September 2025.

Addressing heads of state and government, President Touray emphasised that meaningful development cannot be achieved without peace and stability.

He underscored the importance of effectively implementing United Nations Security Council Resolution 2719, which provides for predictable and sustainable financing of African-led peace support operations. He stressed that security forms the foundation of all development efforts.

Touray highlighted the role of regional economic communities as engines of integration, investment, and growth. He argued that strengthening institutions such as ECOWAS is key to building resilient economies capable of meeting citizens’ needs while advancing regional priorities.

He further stressed that sustainable development depends on strong institutions and responsible governance. To achieve that, he called for greater mobilisation of domestic resources, increased private sector participation, and the adoption of innovative financing mechanisms to drive inclusive and long-term growth.

ECOWAS’ participation in the high-level summit, themed “Implementing Commitments on Financing for Development Goals,” reaffirmed the region’s dedication to global partnerships and its determination to contribute actively to shaping a more resilient and people-centred international development agenda.
