The distribution exerise held at Brusubi brought together staff with each receiving a 50kg bag of rice and 5 litres of cooking oil. The Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) was set up to complement the efforts of the government in the areas of health, education and agriculture. Over the years, the orgnisation has successfully constructed health facilities such as Kundembo Health Center in Gunjur and continuously provides year-round medical supplies and equipment.
In education, DBO has built schools such as the Interior Academy Basic Cycle School in Brusubi, and Kobisala School in Sukuta. In the area of youth empowerment, the organization currently supports training programmes in carpentry and mechanical training.
Aaron Leng, deputy Chief Executive Officer of DBO hailed the gesture, emphasising that the organization is a charitable organisation registered in the country to complement the efforts of the government in the productive sector of our economy.
He said: “We have built schools and a health centre and we are mainly funded by the biannual auctions which do happen at the stadium. People come to Gambia, we auction them and we have the money for our project.”
He added that once or twice a year during Ramadan, they help their staff for sustainability during the month of fasting. Dwelling on the motivation for the kind gesture, he stated that his organisation is aware of the hikes in basic commodities prices in the market and felt the need to support so that food wouldn’t be an issue.
Alieu Sanneh, a beneficiary expressed delight while thanking the organisation for the unflinching support they always render to the staff. He said the gesture is timely and would go a long way in reducing their spending during the month of Ramadan.
He called on the vendors not to double the prices during the holy month, thus urging support from the government and stakeholders involved in the buy-and-sell business to regulate the prices in the market to avoid any malpractice.
Absa Njang who delivered the vote of thanks, also expressed similar sentiment.
