The Drug Law Enforcement Agency, The Gambia (DLEAG), North Bank Region (NBR) command on Tuesday, January 27, conducted a sensitisation programme on drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking for soldiers of the 2 Infantry Battalion at the Farafenni Barracks.

The outreach programme was aimed at equipping soldiers with practical knowledge on the dangers of substance abuse and the legal consequences of involvement in illicit drug trafficking, particularly in relation to national security and operational readiness.

Welcoming the DLEAG delegation, Major Edward Jatta thanked the agency for selecting the battalion for the sensitisation exercise, noting that the knowledge gained would enhance professionalism and strengthen the soldiersrole in maintaining security. He urged officers to remain law-abiding and to avoid all forms of drug-related activities.

DLEAG’s Deputy Commissioner for the North Bank Region, Baboucarr Corr, called for unity and collaboration among security services in the fight against drug abuse. He stressed that security personnel are role models in society and must uphold professionalism and integrity at all times to protect their image and the institutions they represent.

Any involvement in substance abuse undermines public trust and weakens national security, he warned, advising soldiers to remain vigilant and disciplined in the discharge of their duties.

Speaking on behalf of the Director General of DLEAG, NCOII Adama Bah, the agency’s Regional DDR and Media Advocacy Officer, thanked the battalion command and soldiers for their warm reception and continued cooperation with DLEAG operations in the region. He emphasised that combating drug abuse requires collective responsibility, adding that DLEAG cannot win the fight alone without the support of sister security services and community stakeholders.

Mr. Bah highlighted the dangers of drug abuse among security personnel, noting its direct impact on unit cohesion, discipline, and operational effectiveness. He also delivered presentations on the legal and health implications of drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking.

Also speaking, NCAS Omar Jawo, DLEAG Station Officer in Farafenni, cautioned soldiers against engaging in drug-related activities, stressing that the law applies equally to all. He said arresting fellow security officers for drug offences is difficult but unavoidable in the pursuit of justice and accountability.

In his remarks, I.O. Tijan Bah of the 2 Infantry Battalion called for strengthened cooperation and understanding among the security fraternity, urging soldiers to support DLEAG in its mandate to curb substance abuse.

Major Francis Jatta concluded by calling on officers to remain disciplined, dedicated, and professional, urging them to be good ambassadors of their institution and to desist from all forms of substance abuse and related activities.
