The China-Gambia Alumni Students’ Association (SGASA) was officially launched on Saturday at a ceremony held at the Sir Dawda Kairaba International Conference Center in Bijilo.

The event attracted officials from the Gambia government, Chinese Embassy and Ex- students from Gambia who studied in China, among a host of others.

At the event, Mr. Zhou Ningyu, Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy in The Gambia, underscored the importance of education, reminding that education, cooperation and people-to-people exchanges are an important part of China-Gambia relations.

He recalled that since the resumption of diplomatic ties in 2016, great progress has been made in the field of education cooperation between two countries.

“Even during the COVID, the Chinese Embassy provided much-needed support to Gambian students conduct on-line studies of Chinese Universities. From the latter half of 2022, we helped each and every Gambian student return to China for studies,” he revealed.

He added that for the past 7 years, about 300 Gambian students have studied in various Chinese Universities with the support of Chinese Government Scholarships.

The Chinese diplomat revealed that the disciplines those Gambian students choose focuses on science and technology, engineering, health and education.

These areas, he added The Gambia needs urgently as part of its national development.  “After successfully completing their studies in China, most of these students returned to the Gambia to serve the Gambian people, and play an important role in almost all key sectors, including public service, economy, business, social work, education, health, agriculture etc.”

For his part, Prof. Pierre Gomez, Minister of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology, acknowledged the invaluable contributions of China towards the development of The Gambia.

The People's Republic of China, he went on, has been a steadfast partner, providing crucial support in various forms, including the funding of vital infrastructure such as the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Centre, roads and bridges, among other essential projects.

"One cannot overlook the remarkable impact of China on Gambia's capacity building endeavors. Through comprehensive training programs, both short term and long term, our citizens have had the opportunity to acquire knowledge and skills in diverse fields." he said.

That collaboration, Minister Gomez noted has not only empowered individuals, but has also enhanced ‘our nation's overall capabilities, contributing significantly to our growth and development.

“The impact of this collaboration is not only seen in the skills and knowledge acquired, but also in the enduring friendships and cultural exchanges that have enriched our nations."

To that end, Prof. Gomez emphasised that the establishment of the China-Gambia Alumni Students' Association is a milestone that resonates with the spirit of friendship and shared aspirations.

For his part, Lamin Ceesay, president of the China-Gambia Alumni Students' Association, said the association is committed to contributing and strengthening of the already existing ties between the People’s Republic of China through the Chinese Embassy and the people and Government of The Gambia.
