Jaiteh denied the allegation and gave a detailed account of events leading to his arrest. He stated that while on duty from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., he received a phone call from a man named Lamin, who asked him to return home. Upon arrival, Lamin allegedly informed him that a girl had made an accusation involving another individual named Adama, who had fled the scene, and that he [Jaiteh] had been implicated.
“I told him I would not run away,” Jaiteh testified. “Lamin then slapped me, kicked me, and dragged me into a room, locking the door behind him.”
He said that Lamin subsequently phoned Police Officer Jammeh, who arrived shortly after. Jaiteh claimed that Lamin confirmed knowing him and requested Officer Jammeh take him to the police station.
Jaiteh added that he was asked to board a vehicle where he encountered a woman named Kaddy and her daughter. He told the officer about his situation and alleged that his car had been sold. Kaddy then instructed the officer to bring him along, and he was transported to the Serekunda Police Station, where he was taken to the Child Welfare Office and had his belt and hat removed.
He further stated that he was later transferred to the Police Headquarters in Banjul, where he was detained.
Due to the court’s tight schedule, Mr Jaiteh’s defence will continue on 17 July 2025. He is expected to be cross-examined by the prosecution, who will aim to challenge and discredit his testimony.
