The Ministry of Youth and Sports on Monday unveiled an initiative dubbed: ‘Support to Community Youth and Sports Infrastructure Development’ – a government-funded programme valued at D6.5 million. The signing ceremony was held at the PIA Conference Hall.

The initiative, described as the first of its kind, is aimed at strengthening youth and sports infrastructure at the grassroots level across the country. It brings together beneficiary communities under one framework, with clear guidelines on accountability and implementation.

Delivering the keynote address, the minister for Youth and Sports, Hon. Bakary Y. Badjie, said the programme reflects a deliberate policy shift by government to prioritise sports infrastructure over excessive spending on international competitions.

“For many years, government invested heavily in international participation, and that brought visibility and pride to the country, but infrastructure is what truly sustains sports development. Without proper fields, fencing and basic facilities, progress cannot be sustained.”

He noted that many communities had applied for support as far back as 2022, adding that the ministry had always been interested in supporting such initiatives but was constrained by competing priorities.

Hon. Badjie explained that the funds are being distributed based on the size and readiness of projects, as well as the level of local initiative already demonstrated by communities. While some communities will receive smaller amounts, zones such as Serekunda East and Brikama are receiving up to D1 million each due to the scale of their projects.

He further disclosed that funds will be released in phases to ensure transparency and proper use of public resources. “We will not release the full amount at once for large projects. Once the first phase is implemented and reported, the balance will be released,” he said.

The minister also outlined upcoming infrastructure projects, including plans to upgrade sports facilities in Farafenni, Basse and other regions starting in 2026, in collaboration with the Ministry of Works and local councils.

The Acting Executive Director of the National Sports Council (NSC), Mamudou Jawula, described the initiative as an investment in the future of Gambian youth. He said sports infrastructure goes beyond facilities, serving as a foundation for discipline, teamwork, healthy lifestyles and economic opportunities.

“This support is not just about money; it is about hope, purpose and creating safe spaces for young people,” Jawula said.

The Chairman of the NSC, Lamin Jawara, also hailed the initiative, urging beneficiary communities to be transparent and accountable. He called on them to brief their communities on the funds received and ensure they are used strictly for the intended projects.

A vote of thanks was delivered on behalf of the beneficiaries by Momodou Yusupha Cham, who praised the ministry for responding to years of advocacy by grassroots sports administrators. He assured government that the funds would be used responsibly to set a new direction for sports development in communities.
